English Language Arts
The English Department's curriculum lends itself to thematic units and activities which readily align themselves in terms of the district goal of Social/Emotional learning. Our units on ethics, justice, identity, and society become a springboard for class discussions, group activities, role playing, independent writing, and self-reflective journaling in order to address the learning needs of the whole child.
The English Department fosters the ability for all students to be able to effectively communicate ideas through both traditional and contemporary modes of communications. Students are instructed in oral articulation, written language, and electronic communications. The English Department's focus on the power of language prepares students for higher academia, the business world, private communications, and daily life.
We will continue to expand our effort to compel students to read and to respond to as many challenging and varied texts as possible. Those texts will range from traditional classics to non-fiction works to multicultural works to high interest formats of our time (graphic novels, blogs, etc).

The Canon Future Authors Project is a unique summer program sponsored by Canon that Jericho High School is proud to participate in. Over the course of four days, students immerse themselves in a creative experience that combines writing and photography, giving them the opportunity to strengthen their craft while connecting with peers who share similar passions.
Each year, participants explore a central theme through a variety of writing styles, including poetry, memoir, personal narratives, and collaborative storytelling. The program encourages students to focus on creativity, self-expression, and the writing process itself—free from the pressures of grades and traditional classroom expectations.
One of the most exciting aspects of the program is its final product: a professionally published anthology featuring each student’s work along with an author biography. In the fall, Jericho celebrates these young writers with a special book signing event, where students receive their published books and experience the pride of becoming officially published authors.
Led this year by English teacher Samantha Cunningham, the program fosters not only artistic growth but also a strong sense of community. Through collaboration, reflection, and shared experiences, students build meaningful connections with both teachers and classmates.
As one of only two schools in the country selected to participate, Jericho is honored to continue this partnership and looks forward to seeing the incredible work its future authors create this summer.
