February 2016 Board Notes

The following was discussed at the February board of education meeting which was re-scheduled and held on March 3 due to the closing of school on February 25, 2016.

*The Board of education meeting was held after the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the MS/HS auditorium. It was a great community event featuring performers from all five of our schools.

*Victor Manuel presented his third budget workshop and he addressed questions from the Board and the community. The full presentation is available on the Business and Finance page.

*In their Student Council reports, Middle School and High School students updated those in attendance about school events. Jill Citron, PTA Council president, announced that PTA Council is holding an Open Council meeting on Monday, March 21 at 9:30 a.m. at Jackson Elementary School. Literacy consultant, JoEllen McCarthy, will lead an interactive, fun and educational session focusing on spreading book love and a joy for learning. Come explore new “must-have” titles and resources that connect home and school learning, with parents as PARTners on this learning journey. Participants will explore ways to ignite a passion for reading. Get titles for your child’s TBR (to-be-read), and explore digital tools that support all readers, writers and thinkers. Come for collaboration, communication and celebration of literacy and learning. All are encouraged to attend.

*During the Superintendent’s Report, Hank Grishman said that six Jericho Robotics teams qualified for national competitions and will be competing next month. Also, Mr. Grishman announced that we are in the process of bringing driver’s education back to Jericho. Stay tuned for information regarding signing-up for summer, fall, and spring sessions. The cost of the program will be borne by the participant.

*Also during the Superintendent’s Report, Mr. Grishman recognized Board Members Bill Ferro, Joe Lorintz, and Dab Lee for their continued education through the New York State School Boards Association. He noted that, “All members of this board always remain active and stay current on legislative issues and their professional development, which greatly benefits this community.”

*Jericho’s SEPTA presented over $3,000 in grant money to Jericho staff members to support various efforts to enrich their classrooms.

*The board took action on a number of items, including the approval schedules and the first reading of a board policy. All information, including the full agenda and minutes, is available on the Board of Education page.

*A Budget review meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 10 at 7:15 p.m. in the middle school Library.
