We
offer Chinese to kindergarten, second, third, and fourth
Grade students.
The following
is an outline of our Chinese FLES program.
Kindergarten FLEX
Goals
- To enrich the education of our kindergarten students
by introducing them to a language with an unrelated sound system.
- To provide opportunities for experiencing Chinese
culture through games and songs.
Objectives
- exchange essential information such as greetings and
leave-takings with each other
- provide appropriate
responses when asked questions regarding their names and feelings
- follow simple classroom commands
- count, match, identify, and write numerals from 1-10
- participate in age-appropriate cultural activities
such as games, songs, and festive celebrations
Second Grade Enrichment
Goals
- To reinforce communicative skills
in Chinese.
- To comprehend some simple characters
on familiar topics.
- To promote an appreciation and awareness
for the Chinese literature and culture.
Objectives
- use appropriate gestures and oral expressions for
greetings and leave-takings
- follow simple commands in Chinese
- make comparisons between the English and Chinese writing
systems
- participate in age appropriate cultural activities
- provide information and explain some differences in
the Chinese culture
Third Grade Program
Goals
- To attain basic proficiency in listening
and speaking skills needed for everyday conversations on familiar
topics.
- To read and write target words in
Pinyin.
- To make connections with social studies.
- To demonstrate
an understanding and appreciation for the Chinese culture.
Objectives
- use newly introduced vocabulary to ask and answer
questions appropriately
- read, write, and use numbers 0-100
- express opinions and preferences about colors, animals,
and activities
- read and write vocabulary and
sentences in Pinyin
- recognize Chinese characters introduced and use the
correct stroke order to write simple Chinese characters
- make connections with social studies
- participate in
China celebrations
- give oral presentations
about themselves and family
Fourth Grade Enrichment
Goals
- To attain increased
proficiency in communicative skills
- To develop an
understanding of and appreciation for traditional Chinese ideas,
attitudes and values.
Objectives
- participate in
more cultural activities, such as, writing with pen brush and using
abacus
- demonstrate knowledge
on traditional Chinese ideas, attitudes, and values through discussions
and projects
