Ms. Stanco's Creative Cartographers
"Our Place in the World"
Ms. Stanco's class learned how a map is made. Map makers are called cartographers. The children became cartographers by creating their own map of the world. The class worked in seven different teams which represented each continent in the world. Specific physical features, cities, and other important landmarks were researched and placed on the world map. The maps included a legend, which identified the meaning of symbols, and a compass rose, which showed the cardinal directions, north, south, east, and west. This activity taught the students the importance of utilizing maps as they became more aware of their place in the world.
