A Read Aloud SEL (Social Emotional Literacy) activity was conducted
in the Jericho Middle School Library for seventh and eighth grade students
and the special guest
of honor of
their choice.
- During a pre-activity meeting, the students created a guest
placeholder for their guest under the direction of art teacher
Jan Porinchak. These place holders
included the SEL themes demonstrated by the guest of honor.
- Under the guidance of English teacher Beth Brill, each of the students
created a written testimonial for their guest, explaining how
she demonstrates
our SEL themes. During the activity the testimonials were given
to the guests, initiating a think, pair, share discussion.
- The principal, Mrs. Wren, introduced the students
who provided an overview of SEL and explained how Social Emotional
Learning
is
integrated
in
the
Middle School.
- Pat Minikel, the librarian, read the book Granddaddy’s
Gift to
the group. Reflective journals were distributed to participants for
documenting
connections
about how the story related to our SEL themes. A group discussion
followed.
- Physical education teacher, Jennifer Keane, discussed how the Physical
Education Department supports SEL.
- Beth Brill explained how SEL is incorporated in into
all curriculum areas of the Jericho Middle School. Beth also discussed
the Quality Circles that take place during lunch periods, and the
BRAVE program.
- Students, parents, and staff participated in a discussion on how
to further incorporate SEL into the Middle School. A follow-up meeting
will take place with students and staff.
- In order to promote further
discussion of these SEL themes at home, parents and students
were encouraged to sign out picture books that were on display
in the library.
