A Read Aloud SEL (Social Emotional Literacy) activity was conducted
in the Jericho Middle School Library for sixth grade students
and the special guest
of honor of
their choice.
- During a pre-activity meeting, the students created a
placeholder for their guest under the direction of art teacher
Jan Porinchak, and assistance of Ms Kearon, the librarian. These
place holders included the SEL themes demonstrated by the guest of
honor.
- Mr. Donald Gately, the Middle School principal, provided the parents
with an overview of Social Emotional Learning and explained how Social
Emotional
Learning is
integrated
in
the
Jericho Middle School.
- Ms. Beth Brill, ELA teacher, and Ms Joanne Verdino, social
worker, explained how SEL is incorporated in into all curriculum
areas of the Jericho
Middle
School,
the Quality
Circles that take place during lunch periods, and the BRAVE program.
- Ms Pat Minikel, the librarian,
read the book Night Boat to Freedom, by Margot Theis Raven,
and facilitated the read aloud activity. Participants
were organized into nine groups. Each group was given a piece of
construction paper representing one of
our
SEL
monthly
themes. The groups were asked to record
how their theme was demonstrated in the story, and
share what they came up with with the other groups. Each piece of
paper representing the SEL themes was pasted on the board to form
a SEL Quilt.
The book Night Boat to Freedom was based upon Born
in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers' Project,
1936-1938.
- In order to promote further
discussion of these SEL themes at home, parents and students
were encouraged to borrow picture books that were on display
in the library, and discuss how the children might demonstrate
the SEL themes at home and in school.
