SEL
Read Aloud Activity

November 9, 2005

A Read Aloud SEL (Social Emotional Literacy) Activity was conducted in the Middle School Library for sixth grade students and the special “Guest of Honor” of their choice.

  • During a pre-activity meeting the students created a guest placeholder for their guest under the direction of Jan Porinchak. These place holders included the SEL themes demonstrated by the guest of honor.
  • The program began with a photo slide show, “SEL in Action” showing pictures of sixth grade students demonstrating various SEL activities. We thank Mary Marks for taking the beautiful photographs and Jennifer Keane for coming up with the great idea.
  • Mrs. Wren gave an overview about SEL to the parents.
  • During a Think, Pair, Share, the students explained to their honoree how they demonstrate our SEL themes.
  • Pat Minikel read the book Granddaddy’s Gift to the group. Reflective journals were distributed to participants for documenting connections about how the story connected to our SEL themes. A group discussion followed.
  • Parents and students were invited to take out other SEL books that were on display in the library.
