Summer Assignment

2008-2009

Welcome to AP Environmental Science (APES). I want to remind you that this is a college level course and you must have successfully completed Regents Earth Science, Regents Biology and Regents Chemistry.

Here is your assignment:

1) Read one of the books from the following list. You will be expected to hand in a reading log.   (See guidelines below).

2) Research two federal environmental statutes and two State statutes. Discuss the area of coverage and its key points. Discuss one court case for each. (A bibliography is expected)

Reading Log Guidelines

1) Reading log is to be handed in on the first day of class in September.

2) Write down the title, author, publisher and date.

3) Date your entries as you read.

4) As you read, take notes of the facts, information and situation that you are reading about. Also write down vocabulary and/or information that you don’t understand. Write any questions you may develop as a result of your reading.

5) You are encouraged to write any kind of response to the work you are reading at the time. As you read, indicate the page number of chapter you are responding to.

6) As you read, try to relate or connect the information to your life personally. How does it affect you directly or indirectly? Did it open up areas for you to explore of experiment with, for pleasure or career? How does it fit into the course?

7) What information affected you the most? Why? How do you plan to follow up on what you have read?


Note: Part of you grade is based on the completion of all of the required steps in the reading log guideline.
