XV. Research Paper Checklist

_____1. Title Page - with title in center and listed in the lower righthand corner: your name, course title, the date, and teacher's name.
_____2. Outline - broken into at least three sections, often dealing with a past, present, and future.
_____3. Strong Introduction - present an overview or an anecdote to lead into the paper. Whatever you do, just don't start with historical background.
_____4. Thesis Statement - include your overall argument for the paper. Describe the progression up to today and where the issue/topic/idea is heading.
_____5. Parenthetical References - include parenthetical references at the end of every paragraph in which you have used information from one source or another. That means almost every paragraph, except the introduction and conclusion, should have a parenthetical reference. The reference should include the author's last name and the page number (Smithson 27).
_____6. Proper Quotation, Paraphrasing and Revising - make sure you present quotations from sources so that they flow properly into the discussion. For example, Smithson explains that "Anorexia trends are heavily influenced by the figures of supermodels" (Smithson 27). Or if you are paraphrasing, you might say: the presence of thin supermodels leads to an increase in anorexia (Smithson 27).
_____7. Strong Transition Sentences - in order to move from one section to another, or even one subtopic to another, you must write transition sentences. Transition sentences make the paper flow and build into a substantial argument.
_____8. The Future or Solution Section - the final section of your term paper must be substantial, looking toward what the future holds for the subject and what problems in the subject area could be resolved.
_____9. Strong Conclusion - now that you are an expert on the topic, your conclusion should express the culmination of your ideas on the subject and offer whatever insights you can now share with the reader. The conclusion is the moment to express your strongest and deepest conclusions.
____10. Works Cited - make sure you have the required number of sources, use the proper format, and have referred to each of these sources in the course of the paper.
