The following are thesis statements by seniors in May 2002
for term papers they were drafting. These thesis statements are
longer than most traditional ones, which are usually limited
to a sentence. However, they are presented here to demonstrate
how substantive and focused the thesis statements should be.
"Title IX has helped thousands of females be actively involved
in sports. Without this, females would have never gotten a change
to fulfill their potential, to gain self-esteem, and to achieve
new opportunities for personal growth. However, even though Title
IX seemed like a great law that would end sexual discrimination
against women in sports, we are beginning to see that it is starting
a new wave of discrimination against men."

"ACL surgery and therapy has changed throughout the years
from very invasive to a simple surgery with easy rehabilition.
The future of ACL surgery seems to be taking this process to
even greater rapidity of recovery as the return to everyday life
will occur more quickly through intense therapy."
- Sandra S.
"While computers in the past decades have led to a great
employment boom, the future threatens a level of automation that
may lead to dramatic shifts in the American workplace."
- Imran K.
"The future of the roller coaster seems to be one of transforming
the position of the rider, pushing the limits of height and speed,
and through space and virtual reality, distorting and expanding
the possibilities of thrill rides."
- Brian G.
"Trade agreements between Mexico and the United States offer
the great possibilities of larger markets but also fears that
employment changes could hurt workers in both countries. With
illegal immigration across the border a central problem, the
relationship seems to be growing in both tension and in the special
bonds of common goals, geography, and purpose."
- Farhan M.
"Scientists have been able to clone pigs by transplanting
their organs into humans because the pig's anatomy is very similar
to humans. The next step to pig cloning is to resolve problems
with a virus, PERVs, which causes infection that might have the
same effect on humans as on pigs and mice."

"By giving over control of the Panama Canal to Panama, the
U.S. has left the canal without military protection in an unstable
region. In order to assure a workable, safe canal system in the
future, the U.S. must protect the Panama Canal by its military.
Without the aid of the U.S. military, control of the Panama Canal
may fall into the wrong hands."
- Anshul S.
"With more carbon dioxide from automobiles polluting the
environment, Hybrid Electric Vehicles are becoming a popular,
cleaner alternative. The best chance for the Hybrid car to succeed
is for major manufacturers to offer a combination of traditional
power and reliability, along with the bonus of greater gas mileage."
- Nazia J.
"The twentieth century has brought about a changing status
of the black athlete in the United States including coaching
positions, executives positions, managers, and the players as
well. The next important steps must be in the area of franchise
ownership by blacks."
Sean H.
"In the past, eating disorders have been directly related
to socioeconomic status, but lately eating disorders have been
due to cultural factors. The expansion of eating disorders to
westernized nations is drawing a series of new contradictory
theories on what is at the source of eating disorders."
- Heather K.
"The future of genetic engineering and the Human Genome
Project is very promising and exciting. However, individuals
should not expect a cure for cancer or their own clone anytime
soon. But the near future can offer an increased understanding
of genetics and how genetic engineering could benefit mankind."
- Jason V.
"The Superstring Theory is a way for man to finally understand
his world. As the theory is further explained, the ideas of this
theory continue to expand, suggesting an overall scientific force
that controls the basic structure of our world., such as other
dimensions and new features of space and time."
