Jericho, NY-- Jericho students and grade captains battled it out on Feb. 9 for the title of Battle of the Classes Champion in the Sam Springer Gym after Pep Rally in what BOC coordinator Theone Rinaudo calls “the Battle Royale.” Battle of the Classes promotes school spirit and includes a variety of events such as coin wars, guitar hero, an eating contest, apache, knockout and more.
This friendly competition can turn intense because the prize is quite significant. The grade that wins Battle of the Classes takes home 40% of the money raised for its prom fund. This year, the winning junior class went home $900 richer.
One of the most important goals of Pep Rally and Battle of the Classes is to build school spirit. “Everybody was very enthusiastic, showing Jericho spirit and supporting their grade,” said freshman Zan Sheikh.
Perhaps the most memorable moment for most students was science teacher Dr. John Sausa’s dance during Pep Rally. “I was nervous but I was also very excited to have that opportunity,” said Sausa. “It was unbelievable. The main thing I took away was the ovation.” Junior Taylor Micelotta said, “It was the highlight of my Pep Rally.”
A lot of planning and preparation goes into Battle of the Classes. Captains have to be selected, T-Shirts designed and sold, and events sponsored. “T-Shirt designs were created, submitted and chosen by students,” said junior BOC captain Zach Leighton. “And you voted online for students who sent in applications to be captains.”
The Student Council is responsible for the scheduling of BOC events. According to BOC coordinator Theone Rinaudo, students could e-mail input or ideas to Student Council at student_council@jerichoschools.org.
Another element of Battle of the Classes is fundraising. During a BOC meeting, the students who were involved met and proposed their charity, and then they voted. This year, Student Council decided to provide relief by collecting nonperishable items and donating funds to Haiti.
With a special schedule, time is made at the end of the day for Pep Rally and Battle of the Classes to take place. Each period was shortened by 7 minutes, leaving over an hour at the end of the day for Pep Rally.
